EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
