Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
