This Tug-of-War For the Cable News Network Reveals The Extent to Which Dysfunctional US Journalism Has Become.

This past Thursday night, amid swirling speculation regarding the Brown University gunman, the network's Kaitlan Collins posted on social media, pointing out the conflicting information and guiding the public to her channel's 9pm newscast.

Although CNN is certainly not a impeccable news source, her statement resonated to many. It is one of the outlets where you can find reality-based and largely trustworthy reporting – notably during fast-moving events such as the one taking place close to a New Hampshire storage facility.

A Vulnerable State Amid a High-Stakes Battle

However the news network, now 45 years old, finds itself in a uncertain state as two giant media corporations vie for ownership of its corporate owner, Warner Bros Discovery.

Whatever the outcome, the destiny of CNN has been drawn into a high-stakes game of corporate ownership, not as a question of what helps the news-consuming public.

“This is yet another example of the fundamental flaws with origins in many years of governmental choices,” said Victor Pickard, author of “Democracy Without Journalism?” and a professor of media policy at the University of Pennsylvania.

The speculation about which company will control Warner Bros Discovery – is it going to be Netflix or Paramount Skydance? – misses a broader point.

“The narrative is crafted as a business story with key players as the main characters, but there is hardly any discussion of the public interest,” Pickard said.

The Complicating Factor: The Former President

This situation is complicated by Donald Trump’s views about a network he has long portrayed as perhaps his main “fake news” adversary.

Recall the shouts of “CNN sucks!” at his rallies, his administration's retaliatory withdrawal of reporter Jim Acosta’s press credentials, or his clashes with Collins in official meetings.

Trump now asserts that CNN needs new ownership. You can read that as ownership that will shield him from journalistic oversight. That is part of why he appears to favor Paramount Skydance, which has made a hostile bid.

There is a basis to like that company more. For one thing, it is controlled by David Ellison, son of the ally of Trump Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people.

Paramount, owner of CBS News, also recently placed the conservative Bari Weiss, known for her “anti-woke” beliefs, as the editor-in-chief of that historic news network.

A Possibility of More Instability

It is important to note, if Netflix wins, CNN and other cable outlets would first be spun off into a standalone company. This might be a welcome development to many at the network, but it’s not exactly a secure position. That arrangement could position CNN for a future sale. There is no finish line.

According to Timothy Wu, a great deal of this is against the law, anyway. The well-known analyst of big tech’s dominance wrote recently that anti-trust laws should disallow both deals.

“Each proposed deal would be harmful to the country, and both should be challenged by regulators,” Wu stated.

The Fundamental Issue and a Path Forward

No matter the outcome in this situation, the underlying crisis remains.

“Our current system is a very structure that undermines democracy, but we ought not succumb to the belief that change is impossible,” Pickard emphasized. Government actions – from the 1930s and 1940s – helped to create this profit-obsessed monster, and new policy decisions can tackle it.

Can reform occur in an era where the top communications regulator will not confirm that the agency is independent? Overhaul is highly improbable now, but that is not to say it will not happen in the future.

Measures that bolster independent news organizations, aid local journalism, finance public media, and outlaw the consolidation of media power in a handful of hands are not only possible – they are vital for a functioning democracy.

Regarding media ownership, size does not equal quality. And news organizations including CNN must not be pieces in the most recent merger game.
